What is the Akron Sports Car Club? In continuous existence since its founding in the early 1950's the Akron Sports Car Club has served its members well in a variety of automotive pursuits. Originally serving the needs of "real" sports car enthusiasts through a variety of related pursuits such as Gymkhanas and TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) Rallyes the organization has evolved into two highly focused groups. One group within the Akron Sports Car Club is referred to as Autocross. From its humble beginnings as a Gymkhana, which was basically a very low-speed test of precision driving, Autocross has become the entry level into the motorsports world. The essence of Autocross is to negotiate a course outlined with pylons one car at a time in the least amount of time without hitting or knocking over any pylons. Cars are grouped together according to performance potential thereby preventing a sports car directly competing against a family car. In Autocrossing there is virtually a class for every conceivable type of vehicle, from the Geo Metro to an open-wheeled Formula car. Car preparation for the beginner can be limited to having a safe, streetable vehicle, cleaning out all of the loose items in it, adding some air to the tires and getting some cheap magnetic vent covers to make numbers. Full size letters and numbers are available at the trailer for a small fee, that will be need to be securely taped to the car. You can also visit AXTime.com to print club approved numbers. We used to allow for shoe polish in the windows, but it has became too difficult to read the class and number. From there, car preparation moves up in steps allowing you to become as competitive as your desires and pocketbook allow. The next group within the ASCC is Rallye. TSD Rallyes have given way to a lower intensity but by no means less competitive 'Gimmick Rallye' which are Rallyes based on answering questions related to a theme. Each of the 6-7 Rallyes put on by the club over the year has a particular theme and all Rallyes are organized and staged by members of the club. For example, Akron Sports Car Club's largest and best-known Rallye is the 'One Lap of Akron' Rallye, held in the spring of the year and attended on average by 90 to 100 participants. The theme of this Rallye is to take one lap of Akron while following a written set of route instructions and answering questions along the way by observing businesses, street signs and sometimes even mailboxes. Other annual Rallyes are the 'Romona Mona' and 'Pumkin' Patch' Rallyes. The remainders of the events take on a theme and flavor as determined by the member(s) who is writing and organizing the Rallye. In late 2007 the ASCC members voted to combine with NORA to form one large expanding group of dedicated motorsports enthusiasts. Together we look forward to providing the best amateur motosports events in the country. |
